The Gigantic Tomato Riot In Spain

Food fight positively ranks as one of the top pastimes that children enjoy on a regular basis. For the people who live in Spain, this juvenile idea is magnified as adults join the crowd in the streets for a field day of food fighting. The food of choice happens to be every person's beloved fruit: the tomato.

In Bunol, one of the towns in Spain, guests join the fun and definitely messy field day that involves the biggest tomato fight in history. With more than 240,000 pounds of squishy and juicy tomatoes, it is easy enough to see just how grubby the whole event would end up. The field day that happens around the last Wednesday of August brings a large number of guests and it even ensures that Spain gets a front page feature in newspapers and magazines in Europe. According to history, this event started with a field day that involved a match between contestants carrying smoked leg of ham on a stick. As the tomatoes that was bought for the field day were unloaded from the delivery trucks, a riot broke out. A year later, a crowd of youths decided to reenact the riot, and they started throwing tomatoes. Despite the attempts of local authorities to put an end to the tomato riots, the local government and its people petitioned the event to be held regularly.
